Game Report

SCOTTISH V BEACH, Fletchers, July 2nd

The u18’s played a physical and hard fort game against a Beach squad that had an obvious size and experience advantage throughout their side. The Beach started off with a bang and lead 14 – nil inside the first 10 minutes with some great play from their fly half who danced around the Scottish defense to score a great individual try while setting up another. Further pressure from the Beach’s defense this time saw a couple of turnovers from the young Scottish with two resulting tries to the Beach. It must be mentioned that throughout the first half the Scottish had a number of half chances with individuals getting in behind the Beach defense only to see the lack of support resulting in turnovers that cost us. Half time: Beach 28 Scottish 0

Playing with the strong wind now at their backs the Scottish came out in the second half with a point to prove. Hard running Prop David Merrithew had a number of runs over the advantage line and he was well supported be Ryan Miller who even though has the number 2 on his back should change that with 12 after showing some neat footwork. Scottish had some sustained pressure on the Beach line with a lineout that would compete with most senior sides but unfortunately a couple of unforced errors let the pressure off the Beach. This let off seemed to have motivated the Beach back into life. Over the next 20 minutes they went about putting 5 more tries past the Scottish with some loose and expansive rugby with length of the field plays which would have pleased rugby supporters on both sides as it was a joy to watch. During this Period it must be mentioned that the Scottish never gave up trying with the likes of Captain Matt Barnes, blindside flanker Mike Adair, pint sized winger Stephen Daniels and second rows David LeForest and Alex Gill all working tireless in defense with some great one on one tackles and aggression at the break down which helped at times, to slow the ball down.

The Scottish again showed the never say die attitude as they did last week against Markham and they got their just rewards. With Time up on the clock and the Scottish pressed inside the Beach 22, again working off a fantastic lineout the ball was spun out to number 12, and Man of the Match Jamie Noskiewicz who with aggression, light footwork and great vision, went through and around at least 5 Beach defenders to post the final points of the game, TRY! Converted by Peter Spragge. Final Score: Beach 53 Scottish 7

Finally, it must be mentioned again that with a lineout as strong as ours and with the individual talent in the backline looking to come together over the next week with some hard trainings, we are looking forward to getting on the right side of the ledger next week against the Saracens at Fletchers at 7pm. We look forward to seeing some of you out in support.
